CIP Pumps & Chemical Dosing, Grundfos

A CIP system needs a supply pump, a return method, and, for automatic chemistry, a dosing pump for each chemical.

The supply pump circulates solution through the circuit at the required flow and head. Return is by gravity or a return pump. Dosing pumps add concentrated chemical to reach the working concentration your chemical supplier specifies.

Grundfos is one of the premium pump vendors ARP works with. This page describes pump types and the requirements that drive selection. No pump is selected from incomplete hydraulic data. ARP selects the exact model during engineering from the duty point, fluid, chemical compatibility, temperature, NPSH, and current manufacturer data. In certain applications, ARP can also provide the pump skid.

Circulation / supply pumping

How do you size a CIP pump?

Start from the required flow and the total dynamic head at that flow for the worst-case circuit. Then check fluid temperature, chemical exposure, suction conditions (NPSH), and wetted materials.

Pipe size and horsepower alone are not enough to choose a pump.

What is the difference between CIP supply and return pumps?

The supply pump pushes cleaning solution out through the circuit. The return pump, if used, brings it back to the tank when gravity return isn’t possible.

Return can also be gravity or an existing customer return. Return pumps often handle air-entrained flow, so they get their own review.

Pump type: Grundfos multistage centrifugal pump

Used for CIP supply and circulation where the duty point fits. Requirements that drive selection: flow and head at the worst-case circuit, liquid temperature, wetted materials and hygienic connections, suction/NPSH, VFD or fixed speed, and duty/standby. ARP selects the exact model during engineering.

VFD control

A VFD lets the PLC set supply flow per circuit or stage. In ARP panels, drives are Allen-Bradley VFDs on EtherNet/IP, with the exact drive selected during engineering.

Chemical dosing

How is caustic dosed in a CIP system?

A dosing pump adds concentrated caustic to the wash water. The PLC adjusts the dose until conductivity shows the working concentration your chemical supplier set.

Other options are batch dosing to a tank or flow-paced dosing. The concentration target always comes from validated process or supplier information.

How do you automate CIP chemical concentration?

Measure conductivity, compare it to the setpoint for that chemical and temperature, and let the PLC control the dosing pump. Then record the result for every cycle.

The conductivity-to-concentration relationship is specific to each chemical, so your chemical supplier provides it.

Pump type: chemical dosing pump

For example, a Grundfos digital dosing pump. Requirements that drive selection: dosing flow and discharge pressure, chemical identity and temperature, head, valve, and gasket compatibility, turndown, and control method. ARP selects the exact model during engineering. The builder counts each dosing pump as hardwired I/O (an ARP planning assumption).

Dosing inputs ARP needs

  • Required chemical flow and discharge pressure
  • Chemical identity, concentration, and temperature
  • Viscosity, if relevant
  • Turndown and duty cycle
  • Communication and control requirements
  • Redundancy (standby pump)
  • Chemical compatibility of the head, valves, and gaskets

Control

VFD, accuracy, turndown, redundancy, monitoring, PLC integration.

Frequently asked questions

Can ARP pick my CIP pump from pipe size?

No. Pipe size and horsepower are not enough. ARP needs the duty point, fluid, temperature, NPSH, and compatibility data, then selects the pump model during engineering against current manufacturer data.

Does ARP include pumps in the CIP package?

Yes. ARP can include circulation and dosing pumps from premium vendors such as Grundfos, with each model selected during engineering. In certain applications, ARP can also provide the pump skid.

How do you reduce CIP chemical use?

Dose to a measured concentration instead of a fixed amount, recover and reuse solution where your process allows, and track chemical used per cycle so you can spot drift.

Talk to ARP about your CIP controls

ARP supplies the controls and automation package: the Allen-Bradley control panel, PLC/HMI programming, instrumentation, pumps and dosing as selected, data, dashboards, drawings, and FAT. In certain applications, ARP can also provide the pump skid. ARP integrates with process piping, tanks, and other mechanical equipment from you, your OEM, or your fabricator.

Qualifying standard configurations are quoted, designed, programmed, and shipped in 7–10 business days.
